Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Athletic Performance: The Perspective of Dario Cerasola

We met with Dario Cerasola, graduate in motor sciences with a PhD in sports science, rowing coach for the Italian national team and the Roggero di Lauria Rowing Club in Palermo, a long-time champion now involved in a research project at the University of Palermo studying the effects of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on athletic performance.

Why EVOO?

“Extra virgin olive oil is much more than just a condiment,” says Dario. “Thanks to its natural antioxidants and healthy fats, it’s a valuable ally for those who practice sports. It helps reduce inflammation, supports muscle recovery, and improves neural transmission.”

From the Field to the Table

According to Dario, one of the most interesting aspects of the study is the direct link between quality nutrition and performance:

“Athletes often focus on proteins, carbohydrates, and supplements, neglecting the fundamental role of fats. We’ve seen that regular consumption of a simple food like EVOO, combined with a balanced diet, can truly make a difference.”

Research and the Future

The project in which Dario is involved—part of a program titled Effects of the combined role of olive oil nutraceuticals and open- and closed-skill sports training on cognitive performance—aims to scientifically measure these benefits, focusing on improvements in decision-making speed, reaction time, and data analysis capabilities.

“It’s fascinating to see how a product so deeply rooted in our Mediterranean culture can have such a modern impact on sports science.”

A Word of Advice for Everyone

“Whether you’re an athlete or not, high-quality extra virgin olive oil should be a staple in your daily diet. Choose better oils and use them with the same care a coach uses to prepare for a race: with consistency and attention.”
